The European Parliament today approved the Regulation on quality systems, with 528 votes for, 57 votes against and 33 abstentions. Among the main novelties introduced are some of the priorities of AREPO, including a better ex-officio protection, the recognition of mountain products and a better definition of the role of consortia. In addition, the length of the recognition procedure for geographical indications will be significantly reduced. AREPO regrets the failure in reaching an agreement between the Parliament and the Council on the inclusion of a provision that would enable the management of production volumes by the consortia, as provided in the Milk Package. The Association will continue it work to promote the inclusion of such measures in the Single CMO Regulation.
